Arguably the most controversial arc of the early seasons involves (Kyle Chandler), a charming patient with cardiomyopathy. Izzie Stevens falls in love with him. When his condition worsens and he is moved to #2 on the transplant list, Izzie makes a catastrophic decision: she cuts Denny’s LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device) wire to crash his heart so he will be moved to #1.

In the final scene, Meredith, revived but broken, looks at Derek through a window. He looks back. Neither moves. The screen cuts to black.
