The transgender community and LGBTQ culture have gained significant attention and recognition in recent years. The community has made tremendous progress in terms of visibility, acceptance, and rights. However, despite this progress, the transgender community and LGBTQ individuals continue to face significant challenges and discrimination. This report aims to provide an overview of the transgender community and LGBTQ culture, highlighting their history, struggles, and achievements. Yes, there is tension

One cannot write about the transgender community without addressing the mental health crisis. According to the Trevor Project’s 2023 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, 45% of transgender youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. In states that have passed anti-trans legislation (bathroom bans, sports bans, healthcare bans), that rate climbs higher.

However, as the 1970s and 80s progressed, the mainstream gay rights movement began a strategy of "respectability politics." Leaders tried to distance the movement from drag queens, trans people, and sex workers to appeal to heterosexual society. This led to the painful exclusion of Sylvia Rivera from the 1973 Gay Pride Rally in New York, where she was booed off stage for demanding that the movement include "gay liberation, women’s liberation, and also the liberation of the oppressed... the street people."

Transgender is an umbrella term that includes various identities, such as nonbinary, genderqueer, and gender-diverse individuals. It is important to distinguish between (who you are) and sexual orientation (who you love).

The trans community has offered the world a gift: the permission to change, the courage to be authentic, and the vision of a world where identity is not a cage. That is not just a part of LGBTQ culture. That is the whole point of it.
