In Italia, l'espressione sta diventando un termine di tendenza tra gli appassionati florovivaisti per descrivere quelle varietà selezionate, ibride o a fiore doppio che esulano dalla comune pianta da bordura. Sono cultivar che non si trovano nel bancone del supermercato, ma che necessitano della ricerca di vivaisti specializzati, veri e propri "artigiani del verde", che le riproducono per mantenere intatte le caratteristiche cromatiche e morfologiche.

Mass-produced aquilegias are often clones or highly inbred lines. While they look perfect for six weeks, they lack the genetic diversity to fight off leaf miners, powdery mildew, or sudden frosts. Artisanal aquilegias, by contrast, are a genetic mosaic. In a batch of 50 seedlings, some will be short, some tall; some early, some late.
