The vinyl release of Playing the Piano was a Japan-only affair. Pressed in 2010, only 500 copies were made. Due to surface noise issues on early pressings of solo piano records, many were returned. The copies that survived are the rarest of all. A "Near Mint" copy with the original shrink wrap and "Manufactured in Japan" sticker can fetch over $1,200.

Born on January 17, 1952, in Tokyo, Japan, Ryuichi Sakamoto began playing the piano at the age of 10. His early musical influences were diverse, ranging from classical music to jazz and rock. Sakamoto's parents, both music enthusiasts, encouraged his interest in music, and he quickly developed a passion for playing the piano. He studied music at the Tokyo University of the Arts, where he honed his skills as a pianist and composer.
