Then came the film’s middle act. When Tony infiltrates the Mandarin’s fortress, he doesn’t find a sorcerer with ten rings of power. He finds Trevor Slattery: a hippie, Shakespearean jobbing actor who was paid to perform for a tech villain named Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce).

The story finds Tony Stark struggling with severe post-traumatic stress disorder following the Battle of New York. Haunted by the realization that he is just a man in a "tin suit" in a universe of gods and monsters, Stark becomes obsessed with building an army of automated Iron Man suits. This internal conflict sets the stage for a confrontation with a mysterious terrorist known as the Mandarin, whose attacks force Tony to operate without his technology, relying instead on his innate ingenuity.

Unlike most sequels that simply raise the stakes with a bigger laser, Iron Man 3 opens with a confession. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is having panic attacks. He can’t sleep. He spends his nights obsessively building new suits of armor—thirty-five of them, to be exact—not to fight aliens, but to quiet the voice in his head.

The film also deepened the supporting cast's roles. Pepper Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, moved beyond the "damsel in distress" trope, eventually gaining powers of her own to save Tony in the final act. Meanwhile, the introduction of Harley Keener provided a refreshing dynamic, forcing Tony to act as a mentor and proving that his heroism wasn't dependent on his bank account.

If you haven’t watched since opening night, it is time to revisit it. Ignore the comic book baggage. Ignore the Trevor Slattery memes. Watch it as a character study about a genius learning to live with his demons.
