The D-70’s soul lives in its algorithms, not in a static WAV file. A SoundFont is merely a photograph; the D-70 is a sunset.
The D-70 also introduced a powerful digital mixer interface, allowing users to adjust levels, panning, and effects sends for each part directly from the front panel. It was a bridge between the pure synthesis of the 80s and the workstation revolution of the 90s.
Before we discuss the Soundfont, we must appreciate the source. The Roland D-70 is often called "the D-50 on steroids." While the D-50 had 4-part partials, the D-70 expanded to 4-partial tones with a more advanced structure. Its most famous feature was the : 108 16-bit PCM samples ranging from acoustic pianos to alien digital pads.
This is the gold standard. Created by an anonymous German sound designer in the early 2000s, this soundfont merges the best patches from both the D-50 and D-70 into a 250MB SF2 file. It includes all 64 factory presets plus 48 card presets.
