The Dokkodo (独行道), translated as "The Way of Walking Alone" or "The Path of Aloneness," was written by Musashi in 1645. He composed it in Reigando Cave, where he had retreated to live as a hermit in the final months of his life. Unlike his earlier work, The Book of Five Rings (Go Rin No Sho), which was a technical manual on strategy and combat intended for his students, the Dokkodo was intensely personal.
