Sony wants you to use a PlayStation console for these features. Releasing PC drivers would cost development money, create technical support headaches, and potentially cannibalize sales of their other PC peripherals (like the webcam series).

In 10 continuous hours of Zoom + OBS recording, the camera crashed twice (image froze, required USB replug). This is not production-ready.

The PS5 Camera does not follow this standard.

Solid plastic, no creaking. The cable is USB-C to USB-A (long, ~1.5m), which is convenient since most PC users lack front USB-C ports.

| Feature | PS5 Camera + PC driver | Logitech C920 | Elgato Facecam | |--------|------------------------|---------------|----------------| | Price (used/new) | $40–60 | $70–90 | $200–300 | | Plug-and-play on PC | No | Yes | Yes | | 1080p quality | Soft, 30fps | Sharp, 30fps | Sharp, 60fps | | Low-light performance | Poor | Fair | Excellent | | Background removal | No (needs PS5) | No | No (but software) | | Mic quality | Poor | Acceptable | None | | Driver headaches | Major | None | Minor |

Only buy the PS5 HD Camera if you own a PS5 and occasionally need PC support. For pure PC use, avoid it—no driver hack turns this into a good webcam. Sony could easily release official UVC drivers but chooses not to, and that choice cripples an otherwise interesting piece of hardware.

: The camera only functions on USB 3.0 ports (usually blue and labeled "SS"). It will not work on USB 2.0 or through most USB hubs.
