The Deuterocanonical Dispute: Identifying and Contextualizing the 14 Apocryphal Books
The Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) was fixed by the Council of Jamnia (c. 90 CE), excluding these texts. Jerome (c. 400 CE) initially opposed them but reluctantly included them in the Vulgate as "ecclesiastical" books. The Catholic Council of Trent (1546) declared them canonical (except 1 & 2 Esdras and Prayer of Manasseh). Protestants followed Jerome’s distinction: "The Church reads them for example of life and instruction of manners, but not to establish doctrine" (Article VI, Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion).
