A Character Identifier (CID) font is a composite font format optimized for complex or expansive character sets, frequently used in Chinese, Japanese, Korean (CJK) typefaces, or custom vector text. When an application converts a document to PDF without embedding the full font file, it creates a subset placeholder like CIDFont+F1 , CIDFont+F2 , or CIDFont+F6 .
To understand why you can’t simply "download" this font in the traditional sense, you first have to understand what it is.
Do download from random pop-up sites. Instead, visit the community-maintained retro computing archive:
: If Acrobat fails, try opening the PDF in a modern web browser like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge . They use different rendering engines that can sometimes "guess" the correct font mapping more accurately.
For advanced users, Adobe Acrobat Pro offers a Preflight tool that can analyze and fix font errors.
If you use the fixed version for a client project, inform them upfront about the font's ambiguous status. Better yet, use the fixed version only for prototyping and then purchase a commercial license from a similar type foundry (e.g., Typodermic’s "Courier Prime").
The "Cidfont-f6 Fixed" release (often circulating as version 2.3.1.r) is not an official Adobe patch. Rather, it is a community-driven correction that addresses the following critical flaws:
Set the font size to 6px. The fixed version maintains legible counters (the holes in 'e', 'a', 'o'). Broken versions become a solid black smudge.
Adobe apps sometimes require font activation via Creative Cloud. Manually copy the .otf files to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts\ (Windows) or /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts/ (Mac).
