While original hardware decays, the BIOS lives on in emulators. Every time Neko Project II loads that bios.rom file, it resurrects NEC’s proprietary vision. And as the open-source revival efforts inch forward, we may one day see a PC-98 that runs entirely on free firmware—finally liberating this Japanese legend from its own proprietary past.
A Japanese developer (handle "bluerabbit") created an English-translated version of the PC-9821 BIOS. It replaces the Japanese POST strings with English equivalents. This is a literal hex edit over the original ROM.

If you own a physical PC-98, the BIOS chips are usually labeled. Common chip types:
