When Toula Portokalos, a sweet, awkward 30-year-old Greek-American woman, falls in love with Ian Miller—a non-Greek, vegetarian, "xenophobic" (as her father puts it) English teacher—her sprawling, loud, and fiercely loyal Greek family goes into full-blown crisis mode. From Windex as a cure-all to the belief that "any word is a Greek word," the film lovingly satirizes the immigrant family experience: the pressure to marry a good Greek boy, the overwhelming love of a mother who just wants grandchildren, and a father whose entire worldview revolves around the glory of Greece.
