The waters of continuity became murky with the arrival of Dragon Ball Super . Unlike the original series where the anime adapted the manga, Super operates differently. The series was conceptualized by Akira Toriyama, who provided plot outlines. These outlines were then adapted into a manga illustrated by Toyotarou and an anime produced by Toei Animation. For the purpose of this article, we define "Canon Manga" as the original serialized works written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama ( Dragon Ball chapters 1-519) and the direct sequel series that bears his oversight.

Adding another layer of complexity are the films Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ . These movies were written by Toriyama and are considered canon events.
