The shield gun, which became a point of contention in later versions, was not yet a factor in 1.5. The rifles—the AK-47 and the M4A1—were the undisputed kings of the battlefield, but the submachine guns, particularly the MP5, were far more viable in anti-eco rounds than they are today.
Furthermore, the version was rife with map exploits that the community learned to love (or hate). Wall-banging (shooting through walls) was much more prevalent. On maps like de_dust2 , knowing the pixel-perfect spots to spam an AK-47 through double doors or boxes was a skill gap that defined high-level play. The lack of sophisticated anti-cheat systems in the pre-Steam era also meant that private servers relied heavily on admins, creating a "wild west" atmosphere where anything could happen.
