Don’t search HP.com for a macOS 12+ driver – you won’t find it. Follow the generic driver method above.

Reset the printing system. Go to Printers & Scanners, right-click (or Ctrl+click) in the blank printer list, and select “Reset printing system…” Then re-add the printer using the Generic PCL driver.

The HP LaserJet 1010 is a rugged, reliable monochrome laser printer from the early 2000s. It supports PCL 3 and PCL 5e, but HP dropped macOS support after OS X 10.5. On macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or newer, the printer isn’t natively recognized.

Start with the Generic PCL driver. If that fails, try the community GDI driver. And if all else fails, use an older Mac as a print server. Do not throw away a perfectly good printer just because HP stopped writing drivers. With this guide, you should have your HP LaserJet 1010 printing from your Mac OS X machine within 10 minutes.
