In the desert, the band traded their frantic, 100mph indie-punk for a "syrupy melange" of sound. They embraced heavy reverb, haunted-house organ parts, and a brooding, psychedelic atmosphere. One of the most famous pieces of lore from this era involves guitarist Jamie Cook, who reportedly wandered into the desert and returned the next day wearing a poncho covered in pink dust, claiming he had a "vision" for the sound of the lead single, "".

Upon release, Humbug received generally positive reviews, though it initially divided fans due to its departure from the high-energy sound of Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006) and Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007). Arctic Monkeys - Humbug -2009- -FLAC-

Homme’s production style is characterized by a specific frequency spectrum: scooped mids, fuzzy bass, and drums that sound like they are being played in a cavernous, sandstone cathedral. They had conquered the world with the frantic, wordy indie-punk of Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006) and explored the darker, marginally heavier territories of Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007). But for their third album, frontman Alex Turner and drummer Matt Helders packed their bags and headed to the Mojave Desert.
