In the 1970s and 1980s, the LGBTQ community saw a rise in visibility and activism, with the formation of groups like the Gay Liberation Front and the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP). However, the transgender community was often relegated to the sidelines, with many LGBTQ organizations and leaders failing to address the specific needs and concerns of trans individuals.

This period saw the explosion of trans visibility in media. The film Paris is Burning (1990) documented NYC’s ballroom culture, dominated by trans women and gay men of color. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and To Wong Foo brought drag into the mainstream. However, it was the rise of social media that allowed trans activists to separate "gender identity" from "sexual orientation." This was a critical pivot: LGBTQ culture had long conflated being gay with being gender-nonconforming. The trans community argued that a trans woman who loves men is straight, not gay—a radical idea in a culture that prized queerness as rebellion against heterosexuality.

, on the other hand, is the expression of that lived experience. It includes art, language (slang), fashion, music, rituals (like Pride parades), and social norms that have evolved over decades. Think of the vogueing dance style, the Polari dialect in the UK, the use of pronouns in email signatures, or the annual celebration of Halloween as a gay "high holiday." These are all artifacts of LGBTQ culture.
