In "Smoke Signals," Kurt is ostensibly grieving. He throws a massive search party for his missing son. This puts Dexter in a precarious position. He must participate in the search for the very man he dismembered. This is a classic Dexter trope—the killer hiding in plain sight among the investigators—but the emotional stakes are different here. Kurt is genuinely charming and seemingly heartbroken. He treats Dexter/Jim with kindness, offering him work and camaraderie.
