The film is based on R. J. Palacio’s graphic novel of the same name (illustrated by Er Class). One major deviation in the 2024 film is the visual stylization. Director Marc Forster ( Finding Neverland ) uses a desaturated color palette for the past (muted blues and grays) but introduces vivid, dreamlike sequences where the titular "White Bird" soars through the sky. Forced to flee, she finds shelter in the hayloft of a reclusive, polio-stricken boy named Julien (Orlando Schwerdt).
