Pacific Rim Uprising Movie ~repack~ ✦ Direct
Set ten years after the "Breach" was closed, the world has enjoyed a decade of peace—until a mysterious rogue Jaeger attacks a global summit. The story follows (John Boyega), the rebellious son of the legendary Stacker Pentecost. Alongside his rival Nate Lambert (Scott Eastwood) and tech-prodigy Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny), Jake must lead a new generation of pilots to stop a second, more evolved Kaiju invasion. Also, the villain is weak. Without spoiling anything, the "human" antagonist is forgettable, and the Kaiju’s new gimmick feels ripped straight from a Power Rangers episode. If you love "giant robots vs. giant monsters" cinema, Pacific Rim Uprising delivers exactly what it promises: top-tier action sequences and city-leveling battles. It’s a fun, popcorn-flick expansion of a world where humanity’s best weapon is each other. Set ten years after the "Breach" was closed,
Upon release, the received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (it holds a 42% on Rotten Tomatoes) but a slightly warmer reception from audiences (48% on the Popcornmeter). Critics praised Boyega’s performance and the visual effects but criticized the thin plot, underdeveloped villains, and the handling of Mako Mori’s character. The ends on a cliffhanger. The Precursors, the alien masters of the Kaiju, reveal that they are sending “hundreds” of Mega-Kaiju to Earth. Jake and the cadets prepare to defend the planet. To date, that sequel has not materialized.
Directed by Steven S. DeKnight (of Daredevil fame) instead of del Toro, Pacific Rim Uprising faced the colossal challenge of pleasing hardcore fans while expanding the franchise for a wider audience. Did it succeed? That depends on what you came to see. If you wanted more John Boyega swagger and massive Jaeger-on-Jaeger action, you were in for a treat. If you missed the atmospheric dread of the original, you might have felt left out in the sun.
Pacific Rim Uprising isn't the sequel we deserved, but it’s the cheesy Saturday-morning-cartoon sequel we got. Go for the spectacle, stay for Boyega’s smirk.
