But over the years, home video releases—from DVD to 1080p Blu-ray—suffered from two problems: compression artifacts and a faded color palette. The film’s signature gold-and-crimson aesthetic often looked muddy on streaming. The 4K restoration, handled by a combination of Prasad’s DI (Digital Intermediate) facility and post-production engineers at Annapurna Studios, was undertaken with a singular goal: to present the film as Rajamouli and Senthil Kumar saw it on the 4K grading monitors back in 2009, not as standard def projectors delivered.
