The first step in mastering Tajweed is knowing where the sounds originate. If a letter is pronounced from the wrong exit point (Makhraj), its sound—and potentially the meaning of the word—changes. There are 29 letters in the Arabic alphabet, and scholars generally categorize their points of articulation into five main areas.
