As consumer cyber threats evolve from simple file-based malware to sophisticated ransomware and zero-day exploits, legacy anti-virus vendors face intense pressure to adapt. This paper evaluates AVG Anti-Virus (now a subsidiary of Avast) across three dimensions: (1) historical development of its signature-based and heuristic detection engines, (2) independent third-party lab results (AV-Comparatives, SE Labs) from 2015–2025, and (3) system performance impact compared to built-in Windows Defender and paid competitors (Bitdefender, Kaspersky). Our findings indicate that AVG’s free tier provides near-industry-average detection rates (97.8%–99.1%) but suffers from higher false positives and moderate performance overhead. The 2020 codebase merger with Avast improved cloud-based threat intelligence but introduced UI bloat and privacy concerns over telemetry data sharing. We conclude that AVG remains a viable entry-level solution for low-risk users but lags in advanced anti-ransomware behavior blocking. Recommendations include a leaner architecture and transparent opt-out for anonymized data collection.

To understand the current state of AVG, one must understand its roots. Founded in 1991 in Prague, Czech Republic, by Jan Gritzbach and Tomáš Hofer, AVG (originally an abbreviation for "Anti-Virus Guard") was one of the first companies to recognize the potential of the internet as a vector for software distribution. They pioneered a model that was revolutionary at the time: giving away a robust basic product for free while charging for premium support and advanced features.
Developed by AVG Technologies—now a subsidiary of and part of the Gen Digital family—AVG is a multi-platform security suite designed to block viruses, malware, and phishing attempts. It operates using a sophisticated engine that compares suspicious files against a massive database of malware signatures while also using real-time analysis to catch "zero-day" threats.
