When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in 1940, Anne's sister Margot received a call-up notice to report to a Nazi "work camp" in 1942. The family decided to go into hiding, and Anne's father, Otto Frank, prepared a secret annex in the building where he worked.
The diary itself was nearly lost. Meticulously preserved by Miep Gies, one of the brave Dutch citizens who helped hide the families, it was passed to Otto Frank, the sole survivor, after the war.
