The pendulum swings back to violence. Orphan is the closest the band gets to the Iowa formula: a simple, crushing riff, screamed verses, and a breakdown that feels like a building collapsing. The lyrics are about feeling abandoned by society (“I am not a man, I am a child, I am an orphan”). The drum pattern is a polyrhythm that subtly shifts time signatures from 4/4 to 7/8 without the listener noticing. Slipknot - We Are Not Your Kind -2019-
A slow-burn masterpiece. It begins with a clean, jazzy guitar line before the entire band collapses into a Dillinger Escape Plan-level polyrhythm. Lyrically, it is Taylor’s diatribe against fair-weather fans and critics. The most haunting moment comes at 4:30 when the music stops, leaving only Taylor’s whisper: “What do you want from me?” Silence. Then, the heaviest riff on the record.
