The movie opens on a chaotic and intense battle scene, as Billy Lynn (Angourie Rice) and his squad are ambushed by insurgents in Iraq. When a bullet ricochets off Billy's leg and saves his life, he becomes a celebrated war hero, hailed by the media and feted by the public. As Billy navigates the surreal world of celebrity, he must confront the harsh realities of war and the disorienting effects of fame.
The juxtaposition is brutal. The artificial patriotism of a football stadium clashes violently with the real trauma of war. Kristen Stewart delivers a career-best performance as Billy’s traumatized sister, Kathryn, while Steve Martin plays a sleazy team owner, and Vin Diesel appears as a philosophical sergeant.
